I don't usually participate in What I Ate Wednesday, started by Jen @ Peas & Crayons, (mainly because I don't really keep track with photos!), but we had such a great New Year's meal that I wanted to share it with you!
We had zero plans for New Year's Eve, which was honestly find by me. It's impossible to find a babysitter and the prospect of driving around on New Year's is just unappealing to me. So instead, we planned a kick ass dinner at home...and it was great!
Shaun worked and so Penelope and I grocery shopped in the morning (before the crowds!) and started prepping food in the afternoon. One of the things I really, really wanted to have was a super awesome cheese board. They can get pretty expensive, but since we weren't going out for an expensive dinner, I was ok with it. Additionally, I purchased everything at BJ's, which is such a savings! Penelope even helped put it together...and by 'helped', I mean she pointed to everything and yelled 'scheeeeee!' and then ate a lot of it.
On the board: cheddar, extra sharp cheddar, feta crumbles w/olive oil & oregano, kalamata olives, hummus topped w/kalamata olives & feta, salami, prosciutto, crackers, blue cheese, truffle honey & pears. It was a great surprise for when Shaun arrived home and we munched away as we cooked the rest of our dinner.
And since it was New Year's, some fun spirits were on the menu. Sparkling rose for me (so pretty!) and Stella for him. Oh and I mixed up a sweet 90s hip hop playlist on Spotify for us to groove to while cooking. Played on our new jambox, it included LL Cool J, Mariah, Mase, Notorious B.I.G. and lots more.
For the main attraction, I picked up steaks (also from BJ's) which Shaun grilled. I made potato gratin (recipe needs some serious tweaking though!) and prosciutto-wrapped asparagus bundles from Ina Garten's Make it Ahead. Such a great meal! We enjoyed this while catching the end of The Newsroom.
Penelope also must've known it was a special night because she absolutely refused to go to sleep, throwing a tantrum like never before. So, we let her stay up and the 3 of us watched Monsters University (so cute!).
Oh and dessert! Obviously.
I didn't snap a photo, but we enjoyed Sprinkles cupcakes that Shaun picked up after work. Such a treat!
All in all, a pretty great New Year's Eve. And the above is why I've been back on the Dukan Diet this week!
