Once upon a time, Diet Coke was a serious staple in my life. In college, I wasn't a huge alcohol drinker but I could easily put away a full bottle of DC in an evening. And since then, not a day had gone by in which diet coke didn't make an appearance, though my consumption certainly dwindled over the years.
I'll interject here to say that yes I know how bad diet soda is for you. I've thought about giving it up for years but I could never quite pull the trigger. I never felt super after drinking diet soda. In fact, I never felt refreshed or found my thirst to be quenched by soda. If I had a can with lunch, My mouth would feel fuzzy and less than fresh for the rest of the afternoon. In the end, I just wasn't loving the after effects.
This summer, I started a love affair with iced tea. Whether freshly brewed or bottled, it has been my go-to beverage of the summer. I've found it to be more refreshing and thirst quenching and less gritty on my teeth. And in the process, my beloved diet coke was pushed to the side. It wasn't a conscious decision but once I realized that I wasn't seeking out soda, I decided that there was probably no reason for me to have it again.
And I really haven't missed it. I was at a party this weekend and out of habit I almost reached for a DC. I chose white wine and a side of water instead. Not a bad trade off in my opinion. I plan for this to be a permanent move, but you know I'll keep you posted as I go along!
do you drink diet soda? have you ever 'given it up'?
